To the avid readers of my entries I apologize for being absent for the past two weeeks or so. I have been very busy.
A friend of ours will be married in a few weeks time and we (my friends and I from high school) were given about 4 weeks to whip up his wedding. Oh yes, very busy with a wedding but its not even ours. Henceforth our upcoming project: Punong Abala & Company (wedding on a budget). Akalain mo, we already have 2 weddings to be "busy" with after this.
I bum-no-more. That's is my newest tag line to live with. Today is my first day at work but I'm actually slipping a blog away on my free time. Although I still have a few forms to fill out and a new intranet site to tinker on, I decided to come up with a short log about today: the start of my new journey with Convergys.
Team WTE: I was invited to attend the TDM's WTE at Punta de Fabian in Baras Rizal last week and I had the chance to meet the rest of my peers and I must say they all welcomed me with open arms (naks) and I was pretty much impressed with the group, their achievements and of course the company as a whole. I was really pumped up and ready to start my actual work the following Tuesday.
On NHO: On my 3rd day, I had an opportunity of sitting in CVG's NHO, met new folks and of course the organization too. I didn't feel the "culture shock" this time around unlike when I entered high school and college and even the jitters on my 1st job six years ago. It felt as if I was just transferring to another room and everything (mostly) felt the same. Probably it was because of my tenure in the industry or something.
Today is my actual 1st day at work, I have David Duchovny staring at me from a calendar (how very uncomfy, hehehehe), a folder of forms to fill out on my table, a handful of restos, movies and pix to blog about and a project awaits... at long last I bum-no-more.

THOUSANDS INDONESIAN PARROTS ARE SMUGGLED TO THE PHILIPPINES
The already dwindling population of Indonesian parrots due to deforestation is further threatened by poaching. About 10,000 parrots (Lories and Cockatoos) are caught from the wild in North Halmahera, Indonesia, each year to supply the domestic and the international illegal wildlife trade.
(left, Cacatua alba. Photo courtesy of dkimages.com) In their latest report entitled 'PIRATED PARROTS', the Indonesian wildlife protection NGO ProFauna Indonesia, revealed the evidence on the smuggling of wild caught parrots in Sulawesi and North Halmahera in Indonesia to Philippines during their investigation.
The investigation, which was supported by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and conducted in 2007, uncovered the parrot smuggling network from Indonesia to the Philippines. The parrots poached in North Halmahera are; white Cockatoos (Cacatua alba), chattering Lorys (Lorius garrulus), Eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus) and the violet-necked Lorys (Eos squamata). The Eclectus parrot is a protected species which is prohibited for trade.
(left, Eclectus roratus. Photo courtesy of dkimages.com) The catch quota of white cockatoos (Cacatua alba) for 2007, issued by the General Director of PHKA, of the Indonesian Forestry Department, is 10 pairs and only for breeding purpose. However, the investigation revealed that at least 200 white Cockatoos were caught from the wild in North Halmahera in 2007, which far exceeded the quota.
The red-and-blue Lorys (Eos histrio), endangered species, are also being smuggled. Fortunately, the red-and-blue Lory poaching and trade have decreased drastically due to active confiscation operations conducted by the forestry department rangers in 2005. The local authority's regulation in the villages in Karakelang Island, an island in Talaud Islands group, bordering Indonesia and Philippines, prohibits the poaching of red-and-blue Lory. Thus helps reduce the trade.
OFFSHORE TRANSACTIONS
(left, Eos squamata. Photo courtesy of pbase.com) Most of the Indonesian parrots come from Halmahera Island, North of Maluku. 40% of them are smuggled to the Philippines from the port in Pelita Village, Galela District in northern Halmahera. An illegal wildlife dealer named Mei Lumombo operates from there. He smuggles the birds to Balut Island or to General Santos, in the Philippines, using a private boat.
The sea journey alone to smuggle parrots from Halmahera, Indonesia to General Santos, in the Philippines takes 9 hours. The journey from the forest to villages and to the port also takes a long time. Most boats carrying the smuggled Indonesian parrots do not dock at the General Santos port to unload. The transactions are done offshore or in the sea, where the Philippines dealers collect the parrots from the Indonesian ships. Upon arrival at General Santos, the birds are sent to Cartimar market, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The parrot's death rate is as high as 40 % by the time they arrive at the sales points. For every 1000 parrots caught from the wild, 400 birds died in vain, during the poaching, transportation and trade, due to poor conditions and cruel handling.
LACK OF LAW ENFORCEMENT
The parrot smuggling to the Philippines breaks the CITES (Convention of International on Trade in Endangered Species) agreements, ratified by Indonesia in 1978. Most parrots are listed in Appendix II.
(left, Lorius garrulus. Photo courtesy of dkimages.com) Parrots in CITES Appendix II are prohibited from international commercial trade unless they are captive bred or permitted by the exporting country. In Indonesia the bird trade is controlled by the catch quota.Parrots in the trade are not captive bred.
From the interviews with some animal traders in Cartimar market in Manila, the Philippines, ProFauna uncovered that some of the birds smuggled from Indonesia were intended for export to other countries and to be labelled as captive-bred. It is therefore necessary for the Philippines authority to control and check the parrot breeding centre and the source of parrots for export.
The illegal trade of protected parrots violates the Indonesian legislation of the 1990 (a wildlife law concerning Natural Resources and the Ecosystems Conservations). Accordingly, the perpetrators are liable to a maximum five-year prison term and a maximum 100 million Rupiah fine. Unfortunately, the Indonesian governments has not enforced the law because many protected parrot are still being smuggled abroad and sold openly in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.
At least once in every two weeks there is a freight vessel that dock at Surabaya sea port, transporting illegal parrots. There are about 30 birds of various species being smuggled to Surabaya per shipment. From the data collected by ProFauna about animal markets in Java and Bali, the domestic trade in parrots is still at a high level. The most wanted species is the black-capped Lory (Lorius lory), the second is the sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) and the third is the Eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus).
Tri Prayudhi, ProFauna's Campaign Officer stated, " The Navy of Indonesian Armed Force (TNI) and the Indonesian Marine Police must improve the patrol of marine boundaries between Indonesia and the Philippines seas and the route used for wildlife smuggling from Indonesia to Philippines". ProFauna strongly recommends that both Indonesian and the Philippines governments implement and enforce their wildlife laws.
In addition to the necessity of law enforcement to stop the illegal parrot trade, ProFauna urges the Indonesian government to raise the status of white Cockatoo (Cacatua alba), endemic species of Northern Maluku as Indonesian protected species.
EDITOR'S NOTES:
ProFauna launches PIRATED PARROTS report on the 22nd May 2008 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Come to think of it, this has been my longest vacation for the past 10 years! I was busy in college even during summer breaks where I took 6-8 units of subjects to lighten up my load on my senior year. Well, it did pay off, I was just focusing on my thesis while my classmates were fully loaded. Then joined etel right after graduation. Fast forward ten years, eto, buhay estudyante yata ako eh. Vacation din through out the months of April and May
What have I accomplished so far during this break....
1. I've been tuned in QTV 11 for the past few weeks for these shows:
Hay.... season 7 already ended, mami-miss ko ang American Idol. I'm now really looking forward to season 8! Kaya eto, youtube na lang ulit to relive season 7 at paulit uilit ang mp3 sa PC ko.
Quickfire hosted by Rosebud Benitez is like a local spin off of Rachel Ray's cook show but I guess I would rate it 3 out of 5 while Ray is 5 out of 5. So konting kumbisi pa. I'm not yet sold to the idea to use MSG as the show continually advertises the "umami" taste in a bottle. What can I say, it's there major sponsor.
2. Scrapbooking
Oh yes, sabi nga ni Cathy, you can't stop buying stuff for the hobby! I have a stash full of whatever: paper of all sorts, stickers, letters and chip boards, hardware materials as embellishments, references, buttons, adhesives, punchers, eyelets, coloring materials etc etc etc pero I still think my collection is still not complete. I'm now on my 4th ring binder and slowly getting the hang of journaling and applying techniques from youtube and the references I've read. I even learned a new term: scraplifting. A term used for imitating a layout from an existing one. Pero ang hirap gayahin nung mga nasa internet especially if you dont have the right equipment or right stuff. Pero kaya yan! If there's a will, there's a paint brush!
3. I've had my facebook account for some time now but I haven't updated (nor visited) it even once since I opened one. Actually, it's still as bare as it was before but my contact list and applications are slowly building up. May I just share, parang same folks din ang nasa facebook contacts ko, sa friendster and sa multiply. Talaga namang, can't get enough of social networking sites ang mga pinoy!
4. DFFR twice! Oh yes, the classic debug fdisk format and reinstall! Any Matrix agent can do this even with their eyes closed. May gas, I have to do it twice last week while in the middle of something. The wonders of PC! mabuti na lang at may back up ako ng mga pix ko kaya no hesitation to do a reinstall immediately. I just have to do it twice since the bootleg I used has a missing file so I have to install another one. Mga 2.5 hours talaga to finish an installation kasama na drivers and apps, hay kay tagal nga talaga.
After almost a week after reinstalling it, my PC is still working fine. Mabuti naman.
5. Taught my sister how to open her web mail, use a search engine, use MS Office and identified by sight (and defined) PC hardware parts.
For everyone's knowledge, my sister is a slow poke and uber lazy. Mega slowmo at reyna ng unsolicited advice. Kapag nagtuturuan kami, kailangan talaga may panuro at laser pointer ako para makasunod ang lola mo. I'm not disowning nor disapproving/ discriminating/ belittling her capabilities pero sadyang ganun talaga. Fight fire with fire kapag sya ang kausap. Ayaw makinig at dapat sya lagi ang tama. Hay susme! She's testing my patience!!! Even Moody will roll his eyes on her!
6. Aliping Pamamahay. Oh yes, maghugas ng pinggan, magluto, taong bahay, name it, most likely, I could have done it indoors. hahahaha. Probably the only thing I worried the most was... kung matutuyo ang nilaban ko nung kasagsagan ng bagyo. Natuyo naman, thank God and ang LG spinner!
7. News, news, news at walang kamatayang news: Ch 7, Ch 2, Ch 23, Ch 11. Wala kasi kaming cable kaya yan lang ang options. Hay... paulit ulit, oil price hike, LPG price hike, Meralco, natural disasters (let's pray for China and Myanmar), RCBC incidents, Tanauan rubout, Calamba masacre, Marian Rivera nagtaray, ZTE, Ka Bel (my condolences goes to the bereaved family). Kung ganito ang mga aabutan na headlines ng mga magulang after a day's work, no wonder, umiinit ang mga ulo lalo at kanya-kanyang opinyon na ang sangbayanang Pilipino.
I know these are very shallow and I could have maximized my vacation. Ang dami-daming kong gustong gawin and hopefully I get to do it soon.... you know, learn how to drive, take MBA, tour, theater, etc. Above it all, I miss my relationship with God. I miss my bestfriend (hanggang phone lang kami kahit dyan lang sya nakatira). I miss my hermano, I miss my friends at work, I miss CeD. I miss working. Hay.... akalain mo, 3:52AM na!
I don’t think it was any surprise that Syesha Mercado was voted off “American Idol” on Wednesday night. It was just a formality, really. Probably somewhere around mid-season, most avid “Idol” watchers pretty much knew which two contestants would be left standing.
And now we stand at the threshold of the final chapter of season seven. Next week, baby-faced frontrunner David Archuleta will go head to head with scruffster David Cook. People have referred to the matchup as David vs. Goliath.
But, just who will be the winning David? The 17-year-old ballad-crooning high school student or the 25-year-old born-to-rock bartender?
David Archuleta Age: 17 Hometown: Murray, Utah Musical influences: Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin, Bryan Adams (courtesy of americanidol.com)
Archuleta stormed out of the gates with his rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Already a fan favorite, he kicked it up a notch with this song choice, which proved that ballads are his sweet spot.
Little David just about fell off his pedestal when he flubbed the lyrics to the Beatles’ “We Can Work It Out.” Simon called it “a mess.” This performance proved to fans (and judges) that the kid is only human and also that fast songs aren’t his cup o’ tea.
Archuleta redeemed himself with “The Long and Winding Road,” reinforcing the fact that he’s at his best when singing ballads.
One of the more interesting songs that Archuleta selected was “You’re the Voice,” which Simon didn’t even recognize.
Ballads have carried Archuleta through this competition. There weren’t many times when he stepped out of his safety zone with a fast song and performed as solid. For example, this week he surprised us with Chris Brown’s “With You.” Dancing and singing a Top 40 song isn’t Archuleta’s style. If he becomes the next “Idol,” what does this mean for his longevity?
He’s got the votes, though. So it won’t be a surprise next week if he’s crowned king of the stage.
David Cook Age: 25 Hometown: Blue Springs, Mo. Musical influences: Our Lady Peace, Big Wreck (courtesy of americanidol.com)
Cook has impressed fans and judges since the get-go. Randy called him the “real rocker of the boys” when he sang Free’s “All Right Now.” Each week fans tuned in to see how Cook would interpret and mash up his next song selection. A shining example was his performance of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” which was touted as one of his best. He also spinned Mariah Carey’s poppy “Always Be My Baby” into a dark ballad that Paula said “could be in a movie soundtrack right now.”
It was rare that Cook sang a song in its original form. But when he did, he proved he was able to pull it off (“Phantom of the Opera’s” “Music of the Night”).
Cook had a few low moments, too. During “inspiration” week, he sang Our Lady Peace’s “Innocent,” and the judges were not impressed. For the most part, though, he’s been neck and neck with Archuleta when it comes to judges’ comments. Hence the reason they are both still standing.
So, who will pull it off? If Archuleta wins it’ll be expected. He’s got the popular vote. If Cook is crowned, at least it’ll throw in an element of surprise during an otherwise humdrum season.
An Atheist Professor of Philosophy speaks to his Classon the Problem Science has with GOD, the ALMIGHTY.
He asks one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .
Professor :You are a Christian, aren't you, son ? Student :Yes, sir. Professor :So you Believe in GOD ? Student :Absolutely, sir. Professor :Is GOD Good ? Student :Sure. Professor :Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ? Student :Yes. Professor :My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill.
But GOD didn't.
How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
( Student is silent )
Professor :You can't answer, can you ?
Let's start again, Young Fella.
Is GOD Good? Student : Yes. Professor : Is Satan good ? Student :No. Professor :Where does Satan come from ? Student :From . . . GOD . . . Professor :That's right.
Tell me son, is there evil in this World? Student :Yes. Professor : Evil is everywhere, isn't it ?
And GOD did make everything. Correct? Student :Yes. Professor :So who created evil ?
(Student does not answer)
Professor :Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness?
All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they? Student :Yes, sir. Professor :So, who Created them ?
( Student hasno answer)
Professor :Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World around you.
Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD? Student :No, sir. Professor :Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD? Student :No , sir. Professor :Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD?
Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter? Student :No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't. Professor :Yet you still Believe in HIM?
Student :Yes. Professor :According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist.
What do you say to that, son? Student :Nothing. I only have my Faith. Professor :Yes,Faith. And that is the Problem Science has. Student :Professor, is there such a thing as Heat? Professor :Yes. Student :And is there such a thing as Cold? Professor :Yes. Student :No sir. There isn't.
( The Lecture Theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events )
Student :Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat,
a Little Heat or No Heat.
But we don't have anything called Cold.
We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that.
There is no such thing as Cold.
Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat.
We cannot Measure Cold.
Heat is Energy.
Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.
( There is Pin - Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre )
Student :What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness? Professor :Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness? Student :You're wrong again, sir.
Darkness is the Absence of Something…
You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . .
But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and its called Darkness, isn't it?
In reality, Darkness isn't.
If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you? Professor :So what is the point you are making, Young Man ? Student :Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed. Professor :Flawed ? Can you explain how? Student :Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality.
You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GOD and a Bad GOD.
You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure.
Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought.
It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.
To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that
Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing.
Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey? Professor :If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do. Student :Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?
( The Professor shakes his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument is going )
Student :Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and
Cannot even prove that this Process is an On - Going Endeavor,
Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir?
Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?
( The Class is in Uproar )
Student :Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?
( The Class breaks out into Laughter )
Student :Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . .
No one appears to have done so.
So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that
You have No Brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir?
(The Room is Silent. The Professor stares at the Student, his face unfathomable)
Professor :I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son. Student :That is it sir . . .
The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH.
That is all that Keeps Things Moving & Alive. NB: I believe you have enjoyed the Conversation . . . and if so . . .
You'll probably want your Friends / Colleagues to enjoy the same . . . won't you?
Forward them to Increase their Knowledge . . . or FAITH.
It turned out later that the student is Albert Einstein.

I was in my friend's pad the other day and saw his brother's painting of Battle City on a canvass; detailed to its minute square inch! When I got home, i tried searching for a downloadable windows version and loko what I found!
Here's what I've been to for the past 10 days after etel...
1. finished my clearance 2. coffee with Bunny 3. kumain ng isaw sa kanto (na parang tambay) 4. watched Forbidden Kingdom 5. met up with friends and "celebrated" Earth Day at Starbucks Megastrip 6. VCD marathon 7. update my multiply 8. reorg my phone inbox to free up some space 9. Met up with Ava and went on a food trip at TriNoMa (Five Cows > Jack's Loft > Max Brenner) oh yes, 3 restos in a day. 10. flew to Cebu and met up with some friends at I2 (sori naman at hindi na ko nakapagparamdam sa CC4 and CC6 at amazing race kami to the beach hehehehe) 11. lunch at CnT (puso at lechon Cebu!!!! sayang ubos na ang chicharon bulaklak) 12. laugh trip with JC about panning and geology stuff. Isa syang certified minera (if there's such a term. OK fin, geologist na lang) we talked about diamonds, blast sites, panning by the river for gold, Pangea, dinosaur fossils, Marikina fault line, Philippine fault line, Pablito, California fault line, Pacific Ring of Fire at kung ano-anong ka-geek-o-zoidan sa discovery channel at national geographic. 12. then had dessert at Dessert Factory. Chester, JC and Mimay ordered cakes pero ako, Calamansi Juice at Pineapple Juice to flush away the fat from all the lechon I ate. 13. bought some stuff at Ayala Cebu 14. Had dinner at Pino 15. Went to Sumilon Island on Sunday 16. late dinner at Casa Verde 17. update my multiply pa rin. kidding aside, catch up on my reading (Wicked, Need to Know and PDL) 18. re-open my scrapbook project 19. told my mom na kahit unemployed ang drama ko as of the moment, magbabyad pa rin ako ng share ko sa bills (hayyy....)
Thank you very much and I'm so proud of it! hahahaha. Makadagdag pa sa unemployment rate ng bansa. There's no other way to celebrate unemployment but to eat isaw by the roadside. (Actually, I was thinking of buying ice cream and cake but what the heck)
Midnight yesterday I had an asthma attack. Oh yes, its back. My last known one was 10 years ago, during my 1st year in college. I hate the feeling. You can't breathe even with your mouth wide open. My mom rushed to the nearest drugstore down town (literally, "sa bayan") for some meds. Thank God, I only require oral meds for my asthma. Took a pill of Salbutamol (more popularly known as Ventolin) and was feeling better after an hour. The next day, hala sige, gala naman agad sa Eastwood. Harharhar.
For those who haven't heard of the news, yes, I already left etelecare after 6 years. Heto, bum sa bahay, hinika pa and I haven't figured out what triggered it to (re)surface while I was sleeping.
I first saw Pilobolus at the 79th Academy Awards and boy they're good... they're really good! Check them out:Pilobolus Dance Company is based in Washington Depot CN and has been invited to do several projects like commercials and TV guestings. Thanks to pbenja1, PilobolusDance and digerkam for the videos.
Today was about Manila Oceanpark and having lunch at Binondo.
I've been wanting to go to Oceanpark since March but didn't get the chance to do so. (so again, sorry na Mog). And today was THE day to go.
I was hesitant to go at 1st thinking that it might be closed, but nonetheless, go na ito! I asked mano if he can come along and he said yes. I felt like a child again, amazed by the array of colors God gave these creatures with.
At some point today at the park, I get annoyed by children who hug the aquarium like crazy; with their puny faces flat against the glass to get a good glimpse of what's inside. They don't just get in the way of the camera but I want to be in their places instead. LOL (ang laki kong bully). But of course, patience IS a virtue so I have to wait for my turn.
Check out the rest of the pix in a separate entry in my multiply.
Time for lunch, so off we go to Binondo. Eng Bee Tin it is! Chinese food in China town with Chinese music playing at the background; food that was not just tasty but also a good bargain; it was a terrific way to spend an afternoon.
How to did we manage to get there? Well, a train ride, a couple of jeepneys and some 15 to 20 minute walk.... we got sore feet when we went home. Well, the price to pay for an afternoon of memories for keeps.
It's 11:37PM, April 8, and I'm still updating my multiply with some backlogged videos, ratings and pictures on top of today's adventure.
PS Yesterday was not so exciting actually. I spent most of my day watching CSI NY, wrapped my notebook with plastic cover, went to SM to pick up some stuff including an electric fan to battle the heat out of our dining area. I therefore conclude, today was way way WAY better than yesterday.
Today is my 4th day of my terminal leave. I just came out of bed with no plans at all. I've already updated my multiply: photos, ratings, etc. Mano dropped by yesterday afternoon then I met up with my bestfriend last night for dinner. Poor Mir, he's recuperating from a broken thumb. Ouch.
I'm really looking forward to this Saturday's session at Rizal. Balian na ng buto ulit. hehehehe.
Probably i'll wrap some of my books in plastic sheets to fill in my day with happiness and joy. What a bummer.
